With the Protect College Sports Act now making it to the Senate floor, there is belief among some folks that, should the bill be implemented, it could significantly benefit the world of college sports; yet there are some who aren’t ready to believe that, in its current format, the bill does much for the real growth of sports. One such individual is SEC commissioner Greg Sankey.
Sankey is among those who aren’t inclined to accept the Protect College Sports Act in its raw form and has requested revisions before the SEC and Big Ten can accept it, sparking fears that these two powerhouses might plan a rival Super League to maintain their advantage.
However, a statement via the Senate Commerce Committee seems to allay some of those fears, and it has given Sankey a reason to feel vindicated as the SEC and Big Ten continue to maintain that a Super League is not on the cards.
“So…we are correct in our assessment? Interesting admission, and I look forward to actually seeing it in writing. Finally,” Greg Sankey wrote on X.
What’s Next for the Protect College Sports Act?
While a significant hurdle was crossed in its path towards becoming a federal law, the actual implementation of the Protect College Sports Act still remains a battle as opposition still exists.
While NCAA President Charlie Baker supported regulation in college sports, he has also requested some revisions, which means everything might not be as perfect as some claim.
“As a former governor, I understand that getting important legislation done requires compromise. While the bill does not address every issue college sports face, the current state of play cannot continue, and we must move the bill forward,” Baker said in his statement per ESPN.
“I look forward to working alongside our student-athlete leaders and all 1,100 schools to advance this bill and make changes to ensure it’s as effective as possible.”
