Brendan Sorsby’s gambling controversy has been among the biggest stories in college football this year. While he was able to get an injunction on his eligibility for the 2026 season, the star quarterback and the Texas Tech Red Raiders program decided to part ways.
In Cody Campbell’s statement on Sorsby’s release, he mentioned that the Red Raiders will not be seeking the return of any amount that has been paid to the star quarterback in the name of his NIL agreement.
Analyst Ross Tucker spoke about the money situation in Sorsby’s case and called the former Red Raiders quarterback a candidate for the Andrew Brandt Business of Sports Hall of Fame.
“This is an under-noticed, under-reported, under-thought-of aspect to this whole thing. Brendan Sorsby is keeping the money he earned on this, let’s say, $5 million contract that started paying probably in February or March until now. If it’s $500,000 a month, let’s say March, March, April, May, June, he just made $2 million for being around spring practice at Texas Tech. $2 million. $2 million. So Brendan Sorsby, without having played a game in Texas Tech, without having played a down or been allowed into the NFL, has made $2 million on top of what he made at Cincinnati. This guy is already a candidate for the Andrew Brandt Business of Sports Hall of Hall of Fame.” Tucker said.
NFL Analyst Shares Thoughts on NFL Team’s Potential POV on Brendan Sorsby
During Wednesday’s episode of ESPN “Get Up”, Louis Riddick spoke about some pros and cons the NFL teams could be evaluating when it comes to drafting Brendan Sorsby as he struggles with his gambling problem.
Riddick shared that NFL teams would have to proceed with caution if they want to add Sorsby to their roster, as there are two parts to every player: a football character piece and a personal character piece.
The analyst added that while what’s acceptable in the NFL has changed over the years, there are still strict limitations, especially when it comes to betting on your own team.
“With this young man … You bring him into your football team as a football player, you’re gonna be sitting there and thinking, hey, look, you’re gonna be scrutinizing every single thing he does on the football field on game day, every pass he throws, you’re going, if that’s not a complete pass, ‘did you try to do that? Are you betting on us? Are we all rowing in the same direction here? Are you looking out just for yourself?” Riddick said.
Sorsby has allegedly made bets worth over $90,000 due to his gambling addiction in the past few years.
