The Indiana Hoosiers bucked the odds when they went on to win the national championship trophy last season, capping off an extraordinary campaign that few saw coming at the start of the season.
Head coach Curt Cignetti is largely given the plaudits for the natty winning season, but that would have been impossible without the efforts of top man and QB1, Fernando Mendoza.
Mendoza was the glue that held the team together, and his Heisman run proved just how crucial he was in the team going all the way. Mendoza’s qualities were admired by football fans the world over, and it reflected in the NFL Draft too, as he became the number one pick overall at the showpiece event.
But that begs the question – if not Mendoza, then who? Without the quarterback leading the charge this season, will Indiana be able to repeat last season’s heroics? Well, Joel Klatt seems to think so.
Klatt believes that Cignetti’s qualities alone mean Indiana have all the chance in the world to go back to back, and their replacement for Mendoza is the perfect candidate.
Josh Hoover’s qualities resemble that of Mendoza, and it can’t be a surprise that’s happened. Completely by design, Cignetti picked the second best RPO throwing candidate after Mendoza to lead the Hoosiers, and it might well pay off.
More Indiana Players Now in the Spotlight
Joel Klatt went on to name wide receiver Nick Marsh from the transfer portal, alongside others such as Joe Brunner, Tobi Osunsanmi at EDGE and cornerback AJ Harris.
The reality is that Cignetti doesn’t see this as a one-time victory for Indiana. Hoosiers fans can be excited by the constant willingness to win and it sure appears that they will be the team to beat once again in college football.
