Texas Tech’s billionaire booster Cody Campbell has never been one to shy away from the spotlight. Never truly afraid to speak his mind, he continues to remain in the limelight for his lavish spend to help the Red Raiders, and thus truly embracing the NIL era.
While Texas Tech fans love him for just this reason, others are skeptical about what it does for the game, making it difficult for the have-nots to survive in what is slowly becoming a dog eat dog world.
In his latest controversial moment, Campbell has seemingly enraged the public by simply agreeing with a view of University of Georgia head coach, Kirby Smart, regarding the focus on college football threatening the existence of other sports.
“Well said,” is what Campbell wrote to Kirby Smart’s point about being careful around college football, triggering a host of reactions from fans who felt Campbell was being hypocritical with his statement.
“lol just shut the f up. Nobody is buying your “for good of the game” bull***t, Cody,” one fan wrote, triggering a reaction from Campbell himself.
“Read everything I’ve written and said for the last 5 years. Very consistent: Olympic and Women’s sports are at the greatest risk. This is an economic fact that is playing out in real time. Also, I feel like this is friendly fire because I’m a big OSU fan, and our universities have had a great partnership and have been very aligned on all of this,” Campbell clarified.
But fans weren’t convinced and dished out more punishment to Campbell.
“You don’t give two s**ts about anything besides football. Just be authentic,” a fan wrote.
“This is rich coming from you…….Geez hypocrisy knows no bounds,” another commented.
Why are Fans Upset With Campbell?
Fans somewhere believe that despite Cody Campbell’s public persona of caring about the future of college sports, he’s actually responsible for ruining it in the first place.
Texas Tech’s sudden spending and investment in the transfer portal is somewhat proof of that, but in the NIL era, the program feels it needs to do what it can to survive, leading to a showdown between parties.
