Cam Smith Reaffirms LIV Golf Commitment by Citicizing the Golfing World

Cam Smith opened up about the LIV Golf circuit as he prepares to play in the upcoming tournament. This week, the Saudi league players will tee off at the Adelaide event. On Tuesday, Smith attended a pre-tournament press conference and was asked how the changes in the LIV Golf format have influenced “respect.”

LIV Golf has received criticism since its inception. It was being played in a 54-hole format. However, ahead of the start of the 2026 season, the format has changed to a 72-hole stroke-play format. Speaking about the league and its new format, Smith said:

“I don’t think so. I just think it’s just how it’s become, unfortunately. Like Elvis last week played some of the best golf I think I’ve seen, and it’s unfortunate that the golfing world doesn’t see that how I see it because I see it as that was a great performance and he held off probably one of the best golfers of our generation to win a golf tournament. Yeah, that’s just how it is, unfortunately. I think we’re getting places. Yep, it’s getting better.”

Notably, the 2026 LIV Golf season started with its opening event last week in Riyadh. It was the new member of the league, Elvis Smylie, who dominated the game and registered a win.
Cam Smith also played in the tournament and was tied for 13th place. He started the campaign with an opening round of 69 and then played the next three rounds of 71, 68, and 65.

Cam Smith Opens Up About OWGR Points for LIV Golfers

With the change in the format, the LIV Golf series has also received Official World Golf Ranking points. Notably, the top 10 players and those tiers on the leaderboard will earn OWGR points. Cam Smith was asked about the decision in the pre-tournament press conference on Tuesday.
“I think it’s a work in progress probably still, but it is nice to have that behind us,” Smith said. “That’s been a long time coming, so it’s nice to get the recognition. It’s so hard out here. I don’t think we get the respect of the golfing world that maybe we respect sometimes because of what it is and how we play. I think it’s a work in progress, but it’s a step in the right direction, nonetheless. It was good for Elvis last week. He loves it.

Cam Smith is gearing up to play in Adelaide this week. Last season at the LIV Golf Adelaide event, the Australian golfer had a tough time and played three rounds of 72, 73, and 70 to settle in 30th place. It will be interesting to see how things unfold for him this week. The 2026 LIV Golf Adelaide event is scheduled to take place at The Grange Golf Course from Feb. 12 to 15.
