The situation around Brendan Sorsby continues to get messier. After initially seeming like there was no way back into college football for the former Cincinnati Bearcats star, Sorsby was handed a lifeline by a Texas judge in the form of a temporary injunction that technically allows him to return to the college sport.
That being said, the NCAA is set to appeal the decision which could mean the story is far from over. The betting scandal has been eye-opening in more ways than one, and Texas Tech took a bold decision to confront the matter head on via a social media post, with some fans not enjoying the move at all.
The decision may have been bold, but it’s fair to say that the overwhelmingly negative reaction from fans suggests it might have been a bit premature from the Red Raiders.
“Apparently there is no leadership at Texas Tech. Sold your souls for a few more wins. This move probably isn’t even what’s best for the player long-term. Teaching young people there are no consequences as long as you have money. You ran off the Pirate for less than this,” a fan said.
“You can justify the decision all you want. Some decisions have consequences. But finding a judge in Lubbock to fix the situation is so wrong,” another said.
““Let’s condone and refuse to punish someone who broke the rules in the name of recovery and being there for our students”. Compromising collegiate athletics is shameful. No backbone within this university, it seems,” another commented.
“This is pure garbage. Football is a privilege he lost that privilege by knowingly breaking the rules. You can do right by him by letting him get his degree. He has no business on a football field. Just admit you have no ethics,” one said.
“A bunch of gutless cowards that would cry foul if Sorsby played for any other team. This screams let me be relevant for a university that has done nothing since Crabtree played WR,” another remarked.
What Was the Texas Tech Explanation?
Among the speakers was Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire, who explained that playing football isn’t the top priority for Sorsby as things stand.
“We have a long time before we have to think about when he’s going to play football again,” he said.
“We have a long time to continue to work with him to help him with this addiction and deal with a lot of different things in his life. Right now, our top priority is getting him back in this environment with his teammates, with people who love and care about him, and then deal with the football.”
There seems to be a lot more cleaning up to do by the looks of things, so it might be a while before things start to calm down around the Tech campus.
