“Holy Overpay”: Fans Split as Former Alabama Star Signs $150M Extension as Highest-Paid Non-QB in NFL History

The Houston Texans have made a massive decision about their future and the NFL world is buzzing because of it. Former Alabama star Will Anderson Jr. agreed to a three-year, $150 million extension, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history.

While the Texans have locked in one of the league’s most dominant defensive players, the reaction online has been sharply divided.

Fans Have Mixed Feelings on Will Anderson’s Contract Extension

Fans didn’t hold back in reacting to the historic deal.

“Holy overpay,” one user wrote, questioning whether any non-quarterback should command that kind of money.

Another added, “These contracts are out of control,” reflecting concerns about the rapidly inflating NFL market.

Others took it a step further, suggesting the Texans may have committed too much financially.

“That is way too much money,” one comment read.

While another speculated that he had “signed a contract to lose,” pointing to skepticism about Houston’s long-term ceiling.

On the flip side, plenty of fans saw the deal as fully justified.

“Completely deserved. He is special,” one supporter posted.

Another called it “a statement to the entire league,” emphasizing that elite pass rushers are among the most valuable assets in modern football.

    Will Anderson Jr. Contract

Anderson’s new deal includes a staggering $134 million guaranteed, with an average annual value of $50 million.

Since being drafted third overall in 2023, he has quickly established himself as one of the NFL’s elite edge rushers. In just three seasons, he’s racked up 30 sacks, multiple Pro Bowl selections, and a Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

More importantly, he’s been a cornerstone of Houston’s resurgence alongside quarterback C.J. Stroud, helping the team reach the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

He is entering his prime, has consistently produced at a high level, and remains one of the most disruptive defenders in the league.

By surpassing previous benchmarks, the deal sets a new standard for elite defensive players. Future stars at premium positions, particularly edge rushers, will likely use this contract as a reference point in negotiations.

Whether it turns into a championship window or becomes a financial gamble remains to be seen.
