Ohio State just added another key player to its 2027 recruiting class on Sunday by securing a commitment from four-star cornerback Deontay Malone. While Buckeye fans celebrated the addition, rival fan bases quickly flooded social media with reactions and questioning Malone’s decision to join OSU.
Many Ohio State supporters welcomed the commitment and praised the Buckeyes for recruiting Malone.
“Great choice kid,” one fan wrote.
“Niceee. we needed a cb,” another added.
Not everyone shared that enthusiasm.
“Big mistake young man, joining a sinking ship program is never good,” one fan wrote.
“Sheesh poor kid, guess he doesn’t want to win,” another commented.
Others questioned Ohio State’s recruiting evaluation.
“Yep, shoulda went to msu,” another fan posted.
“Ohio state spent 5 mil on a 4 star,” one wrote.
Ohio State Lands Priority Defensive Target
Deontay Malone was one of Ohio State’s top defensive targets in the 2027 cycle. Co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Tim Walton built a strong relationship with Malone.
“Coach Walton is a great guy, I love him. We had a good time and good meetings. I feel like I’d be comfortable around him. He’s like my coach but my best friend at the same time. I got to meet head coach Ryan Day at the end of practice. It was good to talk to him. I felt blessed to talk to him,” Malone told Rivals.
Michigan State, Auburn, Boston College and Maryland were in the mix to recruit him, but in the end, he chose to join Ryan Day’s team over other programs.
Speaking after receiving his Ohio State offer earlier, he made his feelings clear about the program.
“Ohio State is home, I love the program. They have a great program and have developed a lot of great players,” he told 247Sports.
Ohio State continues to stack defensive talent in the 2027 cycle, with Malone joining a class that already includes highly regarded prospects across all positions.
With Walton leading the charge, the Buckeyes were able to keep one of Ohio’s top defensive backs in-state, and Malone now becomes another key piece in Ohio State’s effort to build one of the nation’s top recruiting classes for 2027.
