New details surrounding the tragic death of Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder has arrived. According to an autopsy report obtained by USA TODAY Sports, Ponder had a blood-alcohol content of 0.167 g/100 mL at the time of his fatal crash on March 1, which is more than twice the legal driving limit. The report also confirmed that his cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the single-car accident.
The 23-year-old was driving a 2023 Tesla in Boulder County around 3 a.m. when he lost control while navigating a right-hand curve. The vehicle crossed lanes, broke through a guardrail, struck an electrical pole and rolled at least once before coming to a stop.
Ponder’s mother, Catrina Hughes, shared a heartfelt message with USA TODAY Sports.
“If anything good can come from this loss, it’s the conversations it can start about responsible decision-making, supporting young adults, and making good choices even in ordinary moments,” she said.
She emphasized the importance of looking out for others in difficult situations, and urging people not to stay silent.
“Kids need to know that it’s OK to step in, take keys, call a ride, call a parent, speak up… one small decision can save a life. Don’t be afraid even if it’s uncomfortable. A difficult conversation is easier than a lifetime of loss.”
Her words reflect both grief and a desire to prevent similar tragedies.
How Dominiq Ponder’s Family Is Honoring His Memory
Ponder was born to Wendell Ponder II and Catrina Hughes. His father was a former standout athlete, while his family environment was centered around support towards his career.
Despite being a backup quarterback, Ponder was widely regarded as a beloved presence in the Colorado locker room. Head coach Deion Sanders previously described him as someone who was “full of life” and a natural leader.
In honor of his memory, the family has launched the Dominiq Ponder 722 Foundation. The initiative aims to provide scholarships for student-athletes, promote awareness about responsible decision-making, and support children’s hospitals.
Colorado has also continued to support those affected by the loss, offering counseling to players, coaches and staff while planning to honor Ponder during the upcoming season.
