We are months away from the 2026 CFB season, and Deion Sanders’ Colorado has lost another player to the portal. In total, Colorado has lost 36 players to the portal.
According to DNVR Buffs, Josh McCormick is entering the portal as a track and field athlete, ending a brief five-month stint in Boulder after transferring to Colorado earlier this year. His departure leaves coach Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes with one less option in the special team, as preparations continue for the upcoming season.
McCormick arrived at Colorado in January and previously played at Grambling State. His commitment initially sparked speculation that the team would hold a legitimate competition to replace longtime kicker Alejandro Mata, whose eligibility expired following the 2025 season.
However, things changed later on.
During spring practice, Sanders made it clear that freshman Elliott Arnold would be a preferred option.
“Elliott is the guy, everybody knows their role right now. We’ve got the utmost faith and confidence in him,” Sanders said during Colorado’s final week of spring practices.
Track And Field Could Offer New Opportunity For Josh McCormick
While McCormick’s portal entry is listed through track and field, the move is not entirely surprising given his athletic background.
Before football, he excelled as a jumper during his high school career in Texas. He qualified regionally in both the long jump and triple jump and later resumed track competition while attending William & Mary.
His best collegiate performances came in the triple jump, including a first-place finish at the Virginia High Performance meet and a season-best jump of 13.85 meters during conference competition.
Although he has not competed in track and field for more than a year, those results could still attract interest from programs looking to add experienced athletes.
For Colorado, McCormick’s departure places even more confidence in Arnold heading into the season.
The former highly touted kicking prospect is now expected to handle primary responsibilities without an experienced challenger behind him. While the Buffaloes clearly believe he is ready for the role, depth at the position becomes thinner with McCormick’s exit.
As Sanders continues to reshape the roster through recruiting and the transfer portal, only time will tell whether the efforts paid off. Last season was a huge disappointment, and fans are looking forward to how the team performs in the upcoming season.
