Warren Sapp has been considered one of the greatest NFL players of all time, and him becoming Colorado’s pass rush coordinator under Deion Sanders had a lot of promise. However, after two seasons, the Pro Football hall of Famer has now parted ways with the Buffaloes, sparking questions if he was fired by his fellow Hall of Famer after a disappointing 2025 season.
The answer is no, as it was Warren Sapp himself who tendered his resignation. Colorado’s athletic department revealed this in a statement last Thursday.
“Warren Sapp has resigned from the CU football coaching staff to pursue other opportunities,” the statement read. “CU Athletics thanks Warren for his contributions to our football program over the last two seasons and for his commitment to our student-athletes.”
Sapp is just the latest Colorado coaching staff under Deion Sanders to leave, as several assistant coaches have left for greener pastures. These include defensive line coach Domata Peko who has taken an NFL job with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as DC Robert Livingston, who will now be working for the NFL’s Denver Broncos. For now, Sapp’s former job is still vacant, though Chris Marve will now be the team’s new LB coach and DC.
This had been Warren Sapp’s first-ever coaching job and he has stated that he loved doing it, imparting his decades of experience to the next generation. It is still unclear if he already has a new job waiting for him in the NFL or other schools, but he once helped Colorado become one of the best defensive schools in college football.
What Happens To Colorado’s Defense After Warren Sapp Left?
Warren Sapp leaving may have just been a chain reaction to Livingston and Peko leaving before him. With the three of them now gone, Colorado’s defense now has a clean slate and new defensive coordinator Chris Marve will have to establish a few changes over at Boulder.
Dante Carter will now be the team’s new defensive line coach and Deion Sanders must now find a new replacement for Warren Sapp. This might affect the upcoming spring practices, but the Buffaloes are expected to adopt a new defensive strategy from last time.
Heading into spring training camp, the excitement is still high at Boulder despite the staff changes.
