Deion Sanders Turns Down $30M In NIL Money As Big 12’s ‘Line Of Credit’ Push Rejected By Multiple Schools

Deion Sanders received the chance to expand his purchasing power for his football team amid soaring costs to recruit and keep star players. With costs continuing to rise, the teams that don’t pay risk falling behind, but the risks were not enough to scare Sanders into taking out an offered line of credit.

According to Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today via a Friday Yahoo Sports report, a proposed $30 million line of credit was offered to Colorado, Kansas State, Arizona and Iowa State. Many schools, including the four colleges, declined the offer.

“Colorado, Kansas State, Arizona and Iowa State are the latest Big 12 schools to decline the conference’s proposed $30M line of credit tied to its private capital deal, per
Schrotenboer,” the report read. “‘At least 12’ schools have reportedly declined to accept the offer.”

The refusal to use debt to pay the salaries of future players and coaches comes amid record levels of student loan debt, in which students unable to play sports for a school are often required to go into tens or in some cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars of crippling debt.

The report didn’t dive into how much the interest would be, but many offered debts come with interest that costs as much as the loan. The financial risks are clear and failure to pay can lead to a variety of disastrous results. Sanders’ school elected to look elsewhere for the funds or go without.

Donald Trump’s NCAA proposal weighs capping Deion Sanders and other coaches’ salaries

The cost of doing business in the NCAA has caught the eye of the president, who has been outspoken about the situation brewing in college sports. The presidential proposal has suggested capping the salaries of college football coaches as one of a list of reforms for the financial side of the sport, per a Friday report by CBS Sports.

In addition to capping salaries, the proposal caps NIL spending by closing loopholes and methods used to circumvent the salary cap system already in place. The proposal also limits opportunities to use the transfer portal.

Overall, the proposal appears to be targeted at helping programs cut costs and increase leverage on players.

The recommendations are still early in their formulation and planning, but it’s clear that the target is to level the playing field in terms of the brewing de facto free agency era and NFLization of college football. Will Sanders be forced to recalculate in reaction to the developing situation?
