Can Brendan Sorsby Play This Season? All We Know About Texas Tech QB’s Future

Brendan Sorsby’s gambling troubles have taken another turn as court documents came to light about the size of his total expenditures. Sorsby’s sporting future is already in question, but the documents going public don’t help matters.

Per ESPN, Sorsby placed 40 bets on Indiana during his stint with the team. According to the court documents, Sorsby placed $90,000 in bets over four years. He is also alleged to have asked a family member and friends to place wagers on his behalf.

The NCAA has already denied the Texas Tech quarterback’s request to have his eligibility restored. So, as things stand, Sorsby is unlikely to play in the 2026 season as his court case plays out.

According to a Friday report from Ross Dellenger posted on X, the NCAA requested the judge in Monday’s hearing to deny Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility as it would have “destabilizing ramifications.”

However, Texas Tech responded with a statement of its own, asking the NCAA to reinstate Sorsby’s eligibility and impose a two-game ban on the former Indiana quarterback instead. Tech also mentioned that a strict punishment could lead to “future athletes being disincentivized from seeking the help they desperately need.”

As of now, Sorsby’s football future remains in doubt as the quarterback tries to map out a path forward, which could largely be decided by the NCAA. Sorsby’s legal team has filed an injunction stating the QB has been “clinically diagnosed” with a gambling addiction and that it is a “mental health condition.”

What Could Be Next For Brendan Sorsby?

The NFL would be the next logical choice after a four-year college career, but with the NFL draft over, Sorsby would need to sign as an undrafted free agent, which would essentially tank his earnings. His next choice could be to wait for a season, get treatment in the meantime, and try to find his way into the NFL in 2027.

The other option would be to get into the UFL or make a run at Canadian Football and hope to transition to the NFL from there.

The best path for Sorsby from a time and traditional standpoint would be to win the appeal to return to college football for a season, stay clean from gambling, and transition to the NFL draft in 2027. Of course, he will need to make a comeback in the courtroom first.
