Sports commentator Bomani Jones believes Bill Belichick is a “resource drain” for the University of North Carolina.
Appearing on “The Right Time with Bomani Jones” podcast, Jones said that all of the money the Tar Heels have invested in the Belichick football program has been a “resource drain,” and that the program should instead re-focus its energies on the juggernaut of the program – basketball.
“They seem to have a chaotic infrastructure situation and a resource drain named Belichick. The part of the Belichick hire that we didn’t really do the math on is there’s only so much money, and they ponied up a lot of money to do the things that he wanted to do for that football program, and it ain’t working,” Jones said.
“And I think the biggest part of why that’s making people mad is that football pays so much of everything else, but the tail will never wag the dog in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The dog is basketball. There was a level of alignment that they used to seem to have up top for a very long time. It does not seem to be there now,” he added.
Bill Belichick’s era off to a disappointing start in North Carolina

After over 20 years as the head coach of the New England Patriots, which included six Super Bowl wins, Belichick departed the NFL in 2024. He then signed a five-year, $50 million deal with the North Carolina Tar Heels to serve as their new head coach.
With all of the success Belichick saw in the NFL, many expected that to translate to the collegiate level. Unfortunately, the former New England Patriots head coach suffered a massively disappointing debut in 2025. He and the Tar Heels finished with a 4-8 overall record on the season.
In the ACC Conference alone, the team went 2-6, finishing tied for 13th position. It was the first time the Tar Heels failed to make a bowl game since 2018.
To add insult to injury, Belichick was not selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame back in January, failing to make the first ballot. The news came as a shock to many, who believed the six-time Super Bowl winner would be a guaranteed selection. Now, Belichick and North Carolina will look to right the ship this offseason in hopes of bouncing back in 2026, once again contending for ACC supremacy.
Belichick and North Carolina kick off their 2026 campaign against TCU on August 29 in Dublin, Ireland, at Aviva Stadium.
