Former Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway is excited to play for his new team, the Baylor Bears. After two years with former coach Billy Napier’s Florida-based program, Lagway decided to transfer to coach Dave Aranda’s team during the offseason. Since he announced his transfer in January of this year, reports have surfaced of Lagway being distraught during his time at Florida.
On Wednesday, July 8, college football insider Alex Byington released a report on On3 about coach Aranda’s recent comments on his transferee. According to the seven-year Baylor tactician, he felt Lagway was in a straitjacket with the Gators. Aranda detailed that Lagway was not able to showcase his true potential and is now looking forward to playing at Baylor.
College football fans and spectators disagreed with Aranda’s statement and criticized Lagway’s attitude.
“He’s one of the softest players I’ve ever seen to be honest,” one user said.
“He hasn’t even played a snap at Baylor. All of this chat he better play well after transferring, but not before getting his coach fired,” another fan shared.
“He was playing free when he threw 5 interceptions against LSU,” another user pointed out.
“Is it possible the straitjacket is his football IQ? If so, does that not follow him to Baylor?,” a user questioned.
Other users all over X/Twitter defended Lagway and supported him on his transfer to coach Aranda’s Baylor team.
“Hopefully, DJ can be successful at Baylor. No ill will. I’m sure anything would be better than a Billy Napier run offense,” one fan claimed.
“Jeez, in a straitjacket and he threw 14 picks. Now that he’s free I’m sure he will take better care of the rock,” another fan wrote.
“Billy Napier was a douche bag who coddled the kid…Good riddance to both, good luck to DJ…f the other guy,” a fan posted.
Lagway now hopes for more playing opportunities with the Bears, as he aims to be one of the best quarterbacks in the nation next season. Last year, the young talent played in all 12 of the Gators’ games. The Florida-based program did make it into postseason play and instead finished with an overall record of 4-8 (2-6 SEC).
Dave Aranda believes that DJ Lagway is driven to overcome the chip on his shoulder
In Dave Aranda’s quote on Alex Byington’s On3 report, the 49-year-old said he believes DJ Lagway has a tremendously significant chip on his shoulder that he is looking to overcome. After all, Lagway’s second year with the Florida Gators was headlined by coach Billy Napier’s firing in the midst of the campaign. This affected the team’s morale, including Lagway’s.
Lagway joins coach Aranda’s Bears that finished the 2025 season with an overall record of 5-7 (Big 12).
