Urban Meyer may have been out of the coaching limelight in college football for a while now, but he has been a regular in giving his opinions on the college game thanks to his podcast, and his latest comments seem to be targeting the Florida Gators and their head coach, Jon Sumrall.
Meyer initially spoke highly of Jon Sumrall, explaining his relationship with the Florida head coach, before making it clear that the Gators squad still has areas where they can improve.
“I was active in recruiting coach Sumrall a little bit to come to Florida, I really admire the guy. I didn’t know him at all. I just loved his toughness. I loved when you talked to him. He didn’t complain about NIL and about transfers. He talked about practicing and he talked about how you win in the SEC and the offensive defensive alliance. And I was like “whoa,” Meyer said on “The Triple Option” podcast.
“We spent some time together, I went out watching practice and I really liked their team. I don’t love their team yet. I hope they have a great off season because their offensive defensive line has got to get much more SEC-ish, if you know what I mean.
“Florida is a top five job. I don’t care what anybody says. They have it all, I’m hoping they awaken a sleeping giant with Jon Sumrall.”
Urban Meyer is no Stranger to Winning at Florida
Urban Meyer is arguably one of the greatest coaches in Florida history. Under the charismatic former head coach, the Gators won the national championship in 2006, and repeated the feat in 2008, winning two SEC titles in the same two seasons.
Meyer himself won the natty again in 2014, this time taking the Ohio State Buckeyes to the very top of the college football world before moving on from the game. More of an analyst now, Meyer is clearly still involved in recruitment on the sidelines, and is enjoying every bit of it.
