Legendary coach Bill Belichick has revealed that he uses ancient Chinese war strategies in his football playbook.
Belichick admits that he is fascinated by Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War.” The book, written more than 2,000 years ago, is a treatise on military strategy that emphasizes deception, adaptability, and exploiting the enemy’s weakness. The North Carolina head coach has used these principles to gain a competitive edge over his opponents.

Attack Weaknesses, Utilize Strengths: Bill Belichick’s Philosophy
Belichick is well known for his ability to adjust his team’s strategies mid-game. His remarkable in-game adaptation aligns with Sun Tzu’s philosophy, which advises generals to avoid their opponent’s strengths and attack their weaknesses. When a team identifies an opponent’s weaknesses, they can outsmart them by exploiting those weaknesses.

“Sun Tzu, The Art of War goes back to 200 BC…Figure out what the strengths are on your team, but sometimes you have to protect,” the 72-year-old said when asked about his football philosophy.
“Find the weaknesses of your opponents and attack. You can’t win a war by digging a hole, so you have to figure out where you want to attack and how you want to attack.”
Belichick also spends considerable time studying his opponents to identify their weaknesses and exploit them on the field. Just like with adaptability, this approach aligns with “The Art of War,” which advises generals to “know the enemy and know yourself.”
Although many people may see Belichick’s approach as unorthodox, it has undoubtedly delivered historic results. During his tenure as the New England Patriots head coach, Belichick won six Super Bowl titles, 18 AFC East titles, and 31 playoff victories.
Belichick is one of just three coaches in NFL history to have won six Super Bowls. He also won the NFL Coach of the Year award in 2003, 2007, and 2010 seasons.
