After emerging victorious over the Texas Longhorns in their double-elimination round opener on Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs’ baseball team advanced in the College World Series at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
Georgia football’s two-time national championship-winning coach, Kirby Smart, was among many present for the Diamond Dogs’ comprehensive 7-1 win, showcasing his support as he has vehemently done throughout the season.
In a postgame interview with NCAA reporter Michella Chester, Smart was asked how he felt about Georgia making it to the biggest stage in collegiate baseball. He expressed his excitement over the program’s much-awaited return to the CWS and the overwhelming support from Bulldogs fans, noting how many former players and fans had turned out to back the team.
Speaking about the kind of pregame hype speech he would deliver to the Georgia baseball players, Smart revealed the advice he had already shared with coach Wes Johnson, encouraging the team to play freely.
“I texted with Wes today. I told him: cut them loose, man. You got a loose team. Let them play loose. Let them go out and cut it loose and go be themselves because what they are is good enough,” Smart sAID.
Wes Johnson’s team will next play on Monday against the Oklahoma Sooners, who are coming off a 9-0 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Kirby Smart Explains What Makes Georgia Baseball A National Title Contender
Against the backdrop of Georgia’s Saturday win over Texas, Kirby Smart talked about what he thinks makes this team title contenders.
“Yeah, they win games different ways, right? A lot of different guys have stepped up. They’ve had low-scoring games and high-scoring games. They’re obviously powerful, but they’re resilient. They have this way about them that every guy kind of has the other guys’ back, and I think West just lets them play,” Smart said in an interview with Michella Chester.
Meanwhile on the football field, Smart will take charge of the Bulldogs on Sept. 6, when they host their 2026 season opener against Tennessee State.
