The San Antonio Spurs lost the 2026 NBA Finals when they fell 94-90 to the New York Knicks in Game 5, and it was a heartbreaking moment for Victor Wembanyama and others on Saturday.
Former NFL defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko used the Spurs’ finals defeat as an opportunity to take a swipe at LeBron James.
Shortly after the Knicks clinched the title, Fehoko, who played with Joe Burrow on LSU’s 2019 national championship team, posted on X:
“On the bright side for Victor Wembanyama, Lebron James showed that if you can’t win when the going gets tough you can always leave and team up with the leagues best superstars to win a chip.”
The comment was a reference to James’ decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers after failing to win the championship and joining the Miami Heat in 2010, where he teamed up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh and won his first NBA championship.
While Fehoko took a jab at James, Wembanyama stayed focused on what the loss could teach him.
“It’s extremely painful, but I’m not running away from that. I’m using that to fuel me,” he said.
“I’m sure all these guys you named, they’re not satisfied with being eliminated in earlier rounds or not making the playoffs, and I’m not satisfied with not winning. This is the biggest lesson of my life. As a team, there is no better experience.”
The loss marked the end of an impressive season for the star; he averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game during the regular season.
Former NFL Player Has Been Critical Of NBA Stars
Breiden Fehoko’s latest comment is far from his first controversial basketball take.
The former NFL defensive lineman recently criticized Wembanyama’s NBA Finals performance, calling the Spurs superstar “soft.”
“I’m also cool on Wemby. You can’t be that big and soft. You have an advantage over everyone in the league and you can’t decide if you wanna be KD or Patrick Beverley.
Give the keys to Harper and get him a real star. These two terrorists ain’t it,” he wrote.
Despite the criticism, Wembanyama had a great season. He earned first-team All-NBA honors, won Defensive Player of the Year unanimously, finished third in MVP voting and led San Antonio to the NBA Finals.
The championship may have slipped away this time, but it’s clear that after the loss, the focus remains on returning stronger.
