Yankees Spring Training Update: Randal Grichuk Gets Camp Invite; Cody Bellinger Downplays ‘Very Mild’ Injury

There’s some news coming out of New York Yankees Spring Training camp as they build up for another World Series hopeful season. The team is mostly the same from last season, when they were eliminated in the ALDS against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Now they seek to avenge their divisional round loss while also hoping to win the World Series for the first time since 2009.

Randal Grichuk Gets Yankees Camp Invite

The Yankees have invited outfielder Randal Grichuk to the 2026 Major League spring training. He was signed to a minor league deal. The 34-year old is the fourth outfielder and will be used as a platoon option against left-handed pitching. He has batted .268/.318/.500 slash line versus lefties in his career.

However, in the last season, across the Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals, he had a .703 OPS with seven home runs, 12 doubles, 11 walks and 18 RBI against southpaws.

“He’s kind of settled into that role here now in the last few years. In ’23 and ’24, and even the first part of ’25, he was killing lefties,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the New York Post. “I think he struggled a little bit when he got traded to Kansas City at the deadline last year. But we think he has a chance to be a factor for us.”

The Yankees will use him as an alternate to Trent Grisham, who is terrible against the lefties, hitting only .182/.303/.348 last season.

Cody Bellinger Downplays ‘Very Mild’ Injury

Cody Bellinger was sidelined from Saturday’s 5-1 win against the Blue Jays due to a minor back issue. The Yankees took a cautious approach and rested him for the weekend, including Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

On Sunday, the outfielder talked about the severity of the back injury.

“It’s honestly very mild,” Bellinger said Sunday morning at Steinbrenner Field. “Just ramping up activity and it just tightened up on me a little bit. Really, nothing serious. Where we’re at on the schedule and not even being March yet [when it happened], take a few days, get right and then I think by the time I get back into games, I’ll still be able to have plenty of at-bats to get ready for the season.”

The plan for Bellinger is live hitting practice on Tuesday, followed by a return to game-time action on Thursday.
