Blake Snell’s Opening Day status is in doubt. Meanwhile, there’s good news coming out of the Toronto Blue Jays’ spring training camp concerning Jose Berrios.
Let’s get into the details of both injury updates.
Blake Snell Facing Opening Day Uncertainty
Los Angeles Dodgers southpaw Blake Snell may not be part of the Opening Day rotation, according to manager Dave Roberts. The two-time Cy Young winner is throwing from flat ground. Roberts said Opening Day is not a hard target for Snell to get healthy for.
“Time’s ticking, but like I told him the other day, Opening Day is not necessarily a hard and fast target for us,” Roberts said.
Snell missed a lot of time in the regular season last season because of his shoulder. Therefore, the Dodgers are erring on the side of caution by taking things slowly with him.
Snell will take multiple weeks before he makes his Cactus League debut, as he’ll be required to throw more than one bullpen session before he gets the green signal.
José Berríos Declares “I’m Back”
Jose Berrios made his Spring Training debut on Monday, throwing 2.2 innings in the 4-3 loss against the New York Mets. He threw 47 pitches in the game and 13 more in the bullpen to hit the count of 60.
“Today, I felt like I had nothing on my mind that I fear,” Berríos said. “I thank God that I’m back. I’m healthy.”
At the same time last spring, Berrios felt doubt and discomfort because of his elbow. Now he feels confident and healthy.
After his spring training debut, manager John Schneider was asked if he was aware about Berrios’ elbow concerns.
“Jose’s been around long enough.. knows when he’s good to go and kind of pull back.. if there was ever a point we didn’t feel safe or feel good about him throwing, we wouldn’t have,” he said.
Berrios is an important arm in the Blue Jays’ rotation, and Schneider was quiet impressed with the ace this Spring.
“José is fully healthy. He’s looked sharp,” Schneider said. “His stuff is back to where it was probably two years ago in terms of velocity and his breaking ball.”
It remains to be seen if Berrios can make it till Opening Day without any setbacks.
