Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Ryan O’Hearn was hit for the third time on Sunday during the series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
In Saturday’s first game of the doubleheader, O’Hearn was hit on his front leg. In the second game, he was stung on his elbow with a high-rising fastball. On Sunday, Brewers reliever Grant Anderson drilled O’Hearn with a fastball.
After being hit thrice in the span of two days, frustrations boiled over. Signed to a two-year, $29 million contract, O’Hearn immediately glared toward the mound and exchanged words with Anderson while clearly expressing his frustration before taking first base. However, the benches did not clear.
It’s not only O’Hearn, but the Pirates as a whole have been hit six times.
This has painted a negative picture of the Brewers, and fans reacted to footage.
Ryan O’Hearn Scores 2 RBIs in Massive Pirates Win vs Brewers
Ryan O’Hearn has been hitting really well for the Pirates of late. Just days after his historic three-homer, 10-RBI performance against the Atlanta Braves, the Pirates slugger continues to stay on top of the pitchers.
On Sunday, he drove in two runs in the Pirates’ 14-5 victory, as Pittsburgh completed a three-game sweep before the All-Star break.
O’Hearn contributed with an RBI single during Pittsburgh’s explosive 10-run fifth inning. He later added another RBI to cap off his game, going 2-for-2 at the plate.
The Pirates overwhelmed Milwaukee, collecting 15 hits in the fifth inning. Jared Triolo had three hits, Marcell Ozuna homered, and Henry Davis, Nick Gonzales, and Jake Mangum also contributed key RBI hits.
Meanwhile, on the mound, Paul Skenes improved to 8-8, allowing two runs over 5.1 innings while striking out seven. On the other hand, Brewers ace Robert Gasser struggled, allowing seven runs in just over three innings.
Pirates skipper Don Kelly shared his thoughts on the upcoming rest days.
“Happy going into the break,” he said. “I think when you get the offense rolling like that and have a series like that, you know, necessarily don’t want to shut it down and it’s gonna, it’ll be a good break and, you know, ready to come out on the other side.”
The sweep comes right ahead of All-Star week, as they were just gathering momentum. Over the last three games, the Pirates have outscored their opponents 24-9.
With a 50-47 record, the Pirates are well and truly in the playoff race, potentially for the wild-card spot.
