The West Virginia University baseball team has made history after defeating Cal Poly in the 2026 Morgantown Super Regional and will make its first-ever College World Series appearance. The record-attending crowd at the Kendrick Family Ballpark erupted in celebration, singing John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” as the Mountaineers grooved to the legendary track.
After their dominant win over Cal Poly in Game 1, West Virginia hosted the Mustangs for Game 2 of the NCAA Super Regionals on Saturday. As the ballpark dealt with thunderstorms, rain delays, and flying canopies, the Mountaineers left no stone unturned in their efforts to outscore the Mustangs and left with a 17-1 victory. West Virginia unleashed five home runs and nine stolen bases, with a standout performance by Ben Lumsden, who led the charge with two homers and five RBIs.
Immediately after, 4,675 fans erupted in celebration, despite the storm doing its best to batter the ballpark with gusty winds. The memory of country legend John Denver echoed through the stadium as the Mountaineers locked arms and stood shoulder-to-shoulder and swayed in unison as the fans roared the song “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”
The clip of the viral celebration broke the internet and has picked up more than 900K views and 12,000 likes. A fan wrote:
“Okay, but those country roads actually delivered… Omaha doesn’t know what’s coming.”
The Mountaineers will next be seen at the Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, to play against Troy on Friday, June 12.

“It’s 135 years in the making, so it’s pretty special to be part of something that’s never been done in history. The credit goes to these kids, the players before us, and the fans, and the donors, and the administration, and the folks that covered this and the auxiliary staff and so many people that helped build this program, and that’s what it is – A program,” said Sabins in his opening remarks.
Sabins further went on to say how this victory belongs to the entire state, while also thanking the university for providing him with the opportunity to be the best coach he can be.
