Jose Caballero addressed Dennis Santana’s outburst following the benches-clearing incident during the New York Yankees’ game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Yankee Stadium on Monday.
Caballero is known for waiting until the final moments of the pitch clock before stepping into the batter’s box, a tactic that can disrupt a pitcher’s rhythm while remaining within the rules. In the bottom of the eighth inning, he grounded into a 1-6-3 double play against Santana.
After the play, an agitated Santana blew a kiss toward Caballero and shouted at him before walking toward the first-base side to confront the Yankees infielder, prompting both benches to clear. Speaking to SNY Yankees after the game, Caballero was asked whether he was surprised that pitchers continued to get frustrated despite him operating within the rules. He responded.
“At this point he’s lucky he doesn’t get a ball right away because at this point it’s been 4 years with the same rules we all should known about the rules. The whole league should know who I am, what I do in the box, and they should be aware of it. For you to get mad about something the league’s implementing in this league, you should be mad at someone else,” Jose Caballero said.
The Yankees went on to defeat the Pirates 8-5. Earlier this season, Caballero spent time on the 10-day injured list before returning to the lineup.
What Did Jose Caballero Say About Being Placed On The 10-Day Injured List?
In May, Jose Caballero was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured right middle finger, which he suffered while diving back into first base during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 10. He spent the minimum required time on the shelf and was officially activated from the injured list on May 22, 2026.
During this period, he spoke to YESNetwork, where he weighed in on being placed on the injury list. Expressing his dismay over the incident, he said:
“Yeah, pretty disappointing. I just feel like I could be back sooner but we don’t want to take no risks. It’s early in the season and I rather just cool down and and be good and then come back,” Jose Caballero said.
Jose Caballero will next be seen playing in the match between the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, July 21.
