Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is having a disappointing season at the plate, contributing to Toronto’s struggles. The Blue Jays suffered a fifth straight loss, falling 7-4 at Rogers Center against the Rangers on Saturday.
Guerrero was criticized for celebrating Alejandro Kirk’s home run. The incident occurred in the sixth inning when Kirk refused to wear the home run jacket and walked past Guerrero into the dugout as the Jays trailed 7-3.
Fans were quick to share their reactions to the moment, with many siding with Kirk for not celebrating as the team stared at a fifth straight loss.
The Blue Jays started their 10-game homestand with a 2-1 series loss to the Astros, followed by a four-game series loss to the Rangers, with the series finale yet to be played on Sunday.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is Projecting Sub-Par Numbers on Offense This Season
While Guerrero is averaging a hit per game this season (79 games and 79 hits off 291 at-bats), his overall offensive stat line is underwhelming. The 27-year-old Dominican has a .271 batting average, four home runs, 34 RBIs, and a .706 OPS.
Guerrero is projected to finish with some of the lowest numbers in his major league career. Based on current trends, he’s expected to hit just eight home runs and 67 RBIs this season.
The Dominican star needs to improve, as he carries the hopes of the entire fanbase, especially after guiding the team to last year’s World Series, where they narrowly lost to the LA Dodgers in seven games.
Currently, the Blue Jays hold the third spot in the AL East with a 39-44 record, 9.5 games behind division leaders the Yankees. Toronto will close out its 10-game homestand by hosting the Mets, starting Monday.
