The New York Mets are experiencing a disappointing season, with struggles in both offense and defense. Fans are upset with management, analysts predict a weak end to the regular season, and the clubhouse shows a lack of team unity. Although they have one of the highest payrolls in Major League Baseball, the team, often considered underdogs, is facing high expectations.
However, little has improved this season, leaving them at the bottom of the NL East, 13 games below .500. This is the latest example of their ongoing troubles. How is it affecting their fanbase? A father shared his son’s video on X, in which the young fan could be seen crying and exclaiming, “I don’t want to be the worst team,” and later rallying behind the Yankees.
Take a look at the video here:
Renowned US sports broadcaster and commentator Stephen A. Smith promptly shared his thoughts on the trending video, offering a sincere message to the young fan, criticizing management and ownership, and suggesting he switch his support to the Yankees. Smith noted that this change would also upset him, but only during the postseason.
“Awwwww Damn! See what the @Mets under David Stearns has done. They’ve hurt the Children😩. Come on over to the @Yankees kid. They may hurt you too, but at least they’d wait until October to do it instead of ruining your Summers as early as June!😁😉” Smith wrote on X.
The 1986 World Series champions are currently playing a three-game intra-divisional series against the Phillies at Citi Field. After losing the series opener on Friday night, the home team bounced back to win game 2, 6-2, and level the series at 1-1.
The Mets Will Seek to Win the Series Finale on Sunday
The NYM started their seven-game homestand with a disappointing four-game sweep by the Cubs and depended heavily on not losing the series to the Phillies to avoid one of the most disappointing homestands of the season.
Now that the series finale is in hand, New York has a great opportunity to end the homestand on a positive note and secure a crucial win against their intra-divisional rivals. The home side will start Cionel Perez (3-3), who will face Jesus Luzardo (6-4).
