“Red Sox Have A Decision-Making Problem” – MLB Analyst Rips Boston Over Alex Bregman Miss, Rafael Devers Trade Fallout

The Boston Red Sox have taken a complete turn in their competitive approach. From hoping to make the playoffs, a lot has happened with the team during the 2025 season and in the offseason.

By preferring to play Alex Bregman at third base, the Red Sox damaged their relationship with third baseman Rafael Devers, who was signed to a 10-year, $313.5 million contract. They traded him to the San Francisco Giants before the trade deadline, shocking the entire baseball community. Then in the offseason, Bregman opted out of his three-year, $120 million contract and signed a five-year deal with the Chicago Cubs.

MLB insider Alanna Rizzo pointed out what is wrong with the Red Sox, who haven’t made any noteworthy additions to their roster this offseason. According to her, the problem is not that they don’t have money to spend, but rather that they are not decisive. She added that the Red Sox were wrong in being confident that stars don’t want to leave Fenway Park.

“The Red Sox don’t have a money problem,” Rizzo said. “They have a decision-making problem, and they have a ‘let’s wait around because we think people want to play for the Red Sox’ problem. Alex Bregman is now in Chicago because the Red Sox rested on their laurels, ‘Oh, he’s going to want to come back.’ They guaranteed to themselves that he was going to want to come back, so they didn’t make a move or do anything else.

“Yes, they signed Ranger Suárez, and I guess that’s okay, that’s fine. But the thing with the Red Sox is this: you let Rafael Devers go after the second year, or within the second year,  of a 10-year deal. That just goes to show you, if you’re Bregman, because the Red Sox don’t give full no-trade clauses, that just shows you that, you know what, I still might be moved.”

Red Sox Sign Vinny Nittoli To Minor League Deal

The Red Sox and right-handed pitcher Vinny Nittoli have agreed to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training on Monday. Nittoli has pitched just 18.2 innings in his MLB career, holding a 2.41 ERA.

He pitched 12 innings across the Athletics and the Baltimore Orioles. Last season, he played for the Milwaukee Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate, the Nashville Sounds and posted a 4.50 ERA.

In July, he opted out of his contract with the Brewers and signed with the Orioles seven days later. He managed a 6.35 ERA with nine strikeouts across 11.1 innings pitched for the Norfolk Tides.
