The disciplinary penalty against Manny Machado for his actions, allegedly stemming from the umpire’s mistake, sparked public outcry. The incident happened during Tuesday’s game between the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
The scoreline read 3-2 in the Cardinals’ favor at the top of the sixth inning when Machado was at the plate. With a full count and two runners on base, the third baseman checked his swing on a borderline pitch and assumed he drew a walk.
However, home plate umpire Nick Lentz independently ruled that Machado struck out, ending the scoring threat. The Padres star only realized what happened when he saw the Cardinals players leave the field.
An infuriated Machado slammed his helmet to the turf, and umpire Lentz issued an unsportsman equipment violation against the Padres’ de-facto captain.
Baseball fans on X shared their feelings about the incident. Some highlighted Machado’s controversial past incidents, but disagreed with Lenz decision. Meanwhile, other fans looked back at the umpire’s track record.
“That was a terrible call tho lol,” a fan commented.
“No matter how you feel about Manny it was objectively a bad call,” a fan chimed in.
“They should allow appeals of these “violations” if prompted by terrible calls like this one,” a fan noted.
“Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy but that isnt a swing. Same guy missed the out of the basepath 2 weeks ago Os v Tor. He’s awful,” a fan recalled another incident relating to Lentz.
“Nick Lentz is Hernandez reborn,” a fan wrote, comparing Lentz to Angel Hernandez, the retired controversial umpire. “He missed 20 strike zone calls in one game. Some were just stupid.”
MLB processes unsportsmanlike equipment violation as a direct financial sanction. The fine amount for Machado remains between the league and the Padres. Standard MLB policy dictates that fines fall between $1000 and $5000 for minor equipment violation that does not result in suspension.
Manny Machado Reacts to the Controversial Decision
San Diego Padres lost Tuesday game against the Cardinals, 3-2. Padres third baseman Manny Machado believes that Nick Lentz’ alleged wrong decision changed the momentum of the game, ultimately costing them the game
“It’s a key part of the game,” Machado said post-game, per San-Diego Tribune. “It’s a momentum swing. We had a rally there going. Tati gets on base, Jackson with the double. I’m working the count there, get it to 3-2, check the swing, and the home plate umpire obviously makes the call where he should have just checked.”
“Obviously, that changed the whole momentum of the game,” he added. Runners on first and second, his pitch count gets up, he has to throw to (the next batter) in that situation. I mean, things could have turned out different.
Up next for Machado and the Padres is the series finale on Wednesday. The Cardinals will be looking to compete a series swoop at home. St. Louis had won Game 1, 3-0, on Monday.
