Vice President JD Vance has responded to MLB’s decision to warn three Giants pitchers after they wrote Bible verses on their caps during the team’s Pride Night game. The incident happened during the Giants’ matchup against the Chicago Cubs at Oracle Park on Friday.
Starter Landen Roupp wrote “Gen 9:12-16” on his cap using a silver marker. The text directly overlapped the custom SF rainbow logo on Roupp’s cap. Relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker also had bible verses on their caps.
The uniform alteration resulted in a formal, non-disciplinary warning from MLB on Monday. The MLB clarified on Tuesday that it frequently warns players against personal additions to caps, and the warning had nothing to do with the message’s content.
US Vice President Vance shared his feelings about the matter on X.
“Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore,” Vance wrote on Tuesday.
James Uthmeier, the Attorney General of Florida, warned MLB of consequences.
“Do you practice religious discrimination in Florida, MLB? You’ll be hearing from my office soon,” Uthmeier wrote on X on Tuesday.
Uthmeier assumed office on Feb. 17, 2025, as the 39th Attorney General of Florida. A Republican, he previously served as Governor Ron DeSantis’ chief of staff from 2021 to 2025.
Giants Pitcher Stands by His Decision
San Francisco Giants pitcher Landen Roupp firmly defended his decision to use a Bible verse on his Pride hat.
“It’s just about God’s covenant and a promise that he makes to us that, you know, his faithfulness and his mercy,” Roupp said in his postgame press conference, per NBC Sports.
“That’s just kind of something I believe in, and I stand firm in that, and I’m thankful we live in a country where, you know, we have the freedom to believe what we want … and express what we want,” he added.
Roupp is a 12th-round selection by the Giants in the 2021 MLB draft. He debuted for the team on March 29, 2024.
