WATCH: Rays Pitcher Jonathan Heasley Vomits On-Field In Shocking Moment On First MLB Start Of 2026

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jonathan Heasley’s first relief appearance in over two years didn’t go as planned when he vomited on the mound just three pitches into the game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Wednesday night. Although Heasley recovered and continued pitching, it was a disastrous outing for the 29-year-old.

He allowed five earned runs on eight hits and struck out only two batters in four innings. The Orioles won the series finale 11-2, completing a crucial series sweep against their intra-divisional rivals at home.

Heasley, who has played sparingly in four MLB seasons with the Royals and Orioles, is also no stranger to vomiting during a game in the majors.

On August 23, 2022, while pitching for the Royals against the Diamondbacks, he vomited repeatedly during the game. Despite his visible frustration as he was sick, Heasley later stated he was okay and was more annoyed about not finishing five innings.

Jonathan Heasley Had Earlier Confirmed Having a Weak Stomach

During his first media conference with the Rays broadcasters and journalists, Heasley mentioned that he has a weak stomach, which has caused him to vomit while pitching in the past. However, he emphasized that it is not a cause for concern, as he is always okay during these episodes and can continue pitching, just as he did tonight against the Birds.

“Heasley actually talked to this about us pregame when he arrived here. his is something he’s actually is regularly known for. He actually did hurl on the field when he was with [Triple-A] Durham,” Rays sideline reporter Ryan Bass said about Heasley during the pitcher’s initial evaluation with the ballclub.

“He said when he used to play high school football, it would happen regularly. He just has a weak stomach. It sometimes happens when his nerves kick up a little bit. He said, ‘I’m totally fine.’,” he added.

Heasley will be expected to make his next relief outing when the Rays begin a six-game homestand against the Los Angeles Angels and the Detroit Tigers, starting Friday. Tampa Bay is currently 34-19 on the season, sitting atop the AL East, 1.5 games ahead of second-place New York Yankees.
