Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has broadened his investment activities by purchasing a minority stake in the Cleveland Guardians. This move signifies his shift into becoming a minority investor in a Major League Baseball team he has admired and supported since his childhood.
“I have so much love for this city. I say it all the time: I’m just a kid from the Heights living the dream. I credit every good thing in my life to Cleveland and being raised here with the values and the people and the work ethic. Cleveland Heights is such a diverse and dynamic place… It just fueled such a deep appreciation for life and community and service,” Kelce told ESPN.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have a front-row seat to good ownership in my career, and I know the best teams prioritize culture. Everyone is there to play their role, and right now, I’m here to observe and learn and really to support the team and the city when and where I can,” the Chiefs TE further added.
Since Kelce’s official announcement, Guardians fans have been celebrating and expressing their enthusiasm on social media.
“Appreciate the investment @tkelce. Now tell Taylor Swift to pay for the bazzana extension,” one fan commented.
“Usually when a celebrity/athlete buys minority stock in a team, it’s a ‘oh how fun’, but for a team like the Guardians, this could make a huge difference for payroll. Paul Dolan should have done this years ago,” another fan commented.
“Great Partnership!!! Always so wonderful to see the two of you at various Ohio sports events. All the best to the of you (Taylor and you) So happy for you! Congratulations!” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans rejoiced, sharing hilarious reactions to the announcement.
“Kelce owning a piece of the Guardians? bet he makes them wear Mahomes jerseys lol,” one fan commented.
“Well… this isn’t going to be awkward considering that the Guardians and Royals are division rivals,” another fan commented.
“Taylor gets the Guardians in the event of a divorce,” yet another fan commented.
Travis Kelce Has a Deep Connection With Baseball and the Guardians
Speaking to ESPN, Kelce reminisced about ’90s baseball in Cleveland. The three-time Super Bowl champion shared fond memories of playing the sport growing up in Cleveland Heights and drawing inspiration from his role models, who were mainly big leaguers from the Guardians (then Indians) ballclub.
“There was nothing like Cleveland baseball in the ’90s,” Kelce said. “That’s just a core memory for me. Kenny Lofton, Carlos Baerga, Jim Thome, Sandy Alomar Jr., the list goes on, and I admire how they just continue to pour into this city and this game. It’s something that resonates with me, giving back to the places and the people that gave so much to you,” Kelce said.
“I think I had always felt most confident on the diamond. I was playing every sport growing up, but baseball was actually the only one I had early interest from scouts in, so I really did think it was a viable option for me… But the best part about playing baseball growing up for me was enjoying it with the fellas and their families I played with. I was lucky enough to be on some great teams growing up on the east side of Cleveland,” he added.
Kelce, 36, is the latest active athlete to buy into an MLB team. Other athletes with stakes include LeBron James (Red Sox), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Brewers), Cade Cunningham (Rangers), and Patrick Mahomes, who in July 2020 became a Royals minority owner.
