US President Donald Trump recently talked about baseball and his friendship with late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. On Thursday, Trump welcomed Lionel Messi and MLS champion Inter Miami to the White House. There, he spoke about the current state of baseball.
Trump said baseball isn’t “hot” right now as he turned back the clock when it was. He reflected on his experience watching three-hour games with Steinbrenner, calling it one of the hardest things he had to do.
While Trump didn’t specially mentioned a particular reason, he just said:
“(Steinbrenner) liked me, I liked him and we both liked nobody else,” Trump said.
Trump and Steinbrenner were known to be close friends during the 1980s and 1990s, often socializing in New York circles. The US president used to watch Yankees games with the late owner in the suites.
Interestingly, speculations became rife in the early 1980s that Trump might challenge Steinbrenner for the Yankees’ ownership. At the time, the real estate businessman was really interested in buying a major sports franchise. He owned the New Jersey Generals in the United States Football League. However, those speculations were nothing but rumors as there was no serious attempt made to buy the Yankees.
George Steinbrenner Once Said Donald Trump Should Run For Office
Long before Donald Trump entered politics, it was George Steinbrenner who once suggested that the astute businessman should run for the Oval Office. The letter was wrote in Feb. 1989, in which the late Yankees owner praised Trump for his appearance on “The Morton Downey Jr. Show” and also threw the idea of becoming president. On Sunday, Trump revealed the details of that letter on Truth Social.
“You tell it like it is… you should run for President someday and get the whole damn thing straightened out!” the part of the letter read.
The same year, Trump and Steinbrenner joined hands to build a large convention-center hotel in Tampa, Florida. However, their proposal was not accepted.
Even after Steinbrenner died in 2010, Trump maintained ties with the Yankees organization and the Steinbrenner family. He has attended games and met with players.
