After a solid season met with a season-ending injury, Griffin Canning has started to attract interest on the free agent market. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees are looking to bolster their bullpen and they have eyes on Justin Wilson.
Let’s learn more about both of these updates.
Mets’ Griffin Canning Interest Receives Exciting Update
Free-agent pitcher Griffin Canning has reportedly attracted interest from the New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago White Sox. The free agent pitcher threw at UCLA on Friday and his fastball touched 93 mph.
Canning is coming off a solid year, where he posted a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts (7-3) but ruptured his left Achilles tendon to end his season. The injury occurred on a non-contact play as he fielded a ground ball on June 26.
According to Jon Heyman, a one-year deal can be on the horizon, with a salary upwards of $4.25 million, which he received in guaranteed money for last season. Moreover, despite the Achilles tendon injury, Canning is expected to be ready by Opening Day.
The Mets appear to be a strong candidate to land him as they are looking for depth behind their rotation. Moreover, they are listening to offers on Kodai Senga and David Peterson, so a spot on the rotation could be open for him.
Justin Wilson Emerges As Bullpen Target for Yankees
The Yankees traded Justin Wilson to the Cincinnati Reds at the 2021 trade deadline. Last season, he played for the Red Sox and appeared to be the perfect setup man for closer Aroldis Chapman. In 61 appearances, he pitched 48.1 innings, posting a 3.35 ERA with 57 strikeouts against 20 walks.
Wilson is a high whiff reliever with a good pitching arsenal containing a strong fastball and secondary pitches. The Yankees could use such a left-arm reliever on their roster for the 2026 season.
The Yankees’ bullpen busted open a lot of games and while Devin Williams is not returning to the roster, their other relievers also didn’t do well. If they want to make a push against the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL East, they need to improve in this department.
