The Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals are discussing a three-team trade deal involving utilityman Brendan Donovan and Isaac Paredes. Meanwhile, the Rangers are contemplating the fifth starter in their starting rotation.
Let’s learn about both these updates.
Astros Float 3-Team Brendan Donovan Deal
According to MLB insider Chandler Rome, the Astros have discussed a three-team trade with the Red Sox and the Cardinals. The potential trade sends Brendan Donovan to the Astros and Isaac Paredes to the Red Sox. It’s unknown what the Cardinals will receive out of this trade.
Through this potential trade, the Red Sox would get an infielder they wanted this offseason. The Astros get a utilityman in return who can play anywhere on the diamond.
Previously, the Red Sox and the Astros were trying to get a deal done involving Paredes without the Cardinals’ involvement. The Red Sox were willing to send Jarren Duran, but his salary would have put the Astros near the luxury tax threshold, which in turn would have impaired their ability to maneuver at the deadline. Therefore, they floated the option of sending Wilyer Abreu, which the Red Sox didn’t agree to.
Kumar Rocker Favored for Rangers’ No. 5 Spot
The Texas Rangers’ starting rotation is mostly sorted. After landing MacKenzie Gore, the Rangers’ rotation is set up to four spots. It features Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi and Jack Leiter as well. But they have questions regarding the final spot on the rotation.
Kumar Rocker is favored to take that spot. Rocker had a terrible start to last season, giving up 18 earned runs in his first 20 innings. The shoulder issue landed him on the injured list in April. When he returned in June and pitched nine starts, he posted a 4.67 ERA. The Rangers sent him back to AAA in August.
Other Rangers options include Jacob Latz, Cal Quantrill, Austin Gomber, and Nabil Crismatt. It remains to be seen who the Rangers name as the fifth member of a stellar-looking rotation.
