The New York Yankees may not be completely done with their final roster as they are still eyeing a move that can take them to the top. Amid this, a report has come out about the Yankees’ interest in a two-time World Series champion earlier in the offseason.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals have signed free agent outfielder Starling Marte.
Yankees Eye Blockbuster Corey Seager Move
According to MLB insider Joel Sherman, the Yankees reportedly explored a trade to get Texas Rangers third baseman Corey Seager. However, that was early in the offseason and now their current roster, which is pretty much the same as that of last year, is almost set in stone.
Early in the offseason, the Yankees thought about replacing Anthony Volpe at shortstop following his noticeable drop in offense and defensive struggles. Seager sounded like the best option but those preliminary talks never became serious.
Royals Open Talks for Starling Marte
After reports tying Starling Marte to the Royals surfaced, the two parties negotiated and struck a one-year deal, pending a physical. The Royals will be required to make space for him on the 40-man roster.
Marte’s four-year, $78 million contract with the New York Mets ended last season. The Royals had always shown interest in Marte, having explored a trade last winter for the outfielder.
In four years with New York, the outfielder played only 396 games due to several injuries, including groin problems, neck strain, migraines, and a bone bruise in his right knee. Last year, Marte appeared in just 12 games in the outfield. However, he can expect more time there with the Royals.
The Royals’ outfield will include Isaac Collins in left field, and Kyle Isbel in center. Lane Thomas and lefty-swinging Jac Caglianone could share time in right field.
In the last two seasons, Marte has hit .269/.331/.398 slash line and 16 homers in 699 plate appearances. While his contact has been hard, the power is not the same.
