Despite having a down year in 2025, Zac Gallen could fall back to the Arizona Diamondbacks in free agency. As we enter the final week of this month, the market for starting pitching has started to make headway.
Meanwhile, on the East Coast, the Boston Red Sox are emerging as a probable destination for free agent Eugenio Suarez.
Diamondbacks “Frontrunners” For Zac Gallen
Zac Gallen is among the starting pitchers who are yet to be signed this offseason. The problem with Gallen’s free agency is that he declined the qualifying offer, which means any team trying to sign him will have to give up a compensatory draft pick.
According to MLB insider Jim Bowden, the Diamondbacks are a realistic destination for the right-hander to fall back on this offseason.
“The Diamondbacks would love to get him back and are considered the front-runners to re-sign him (and wouldn’t have to give up a draft pick to do it),” Bowden said, while noting interest for Gallen from the Orioles, Braves, Giants, Tigers and others.
The Diamondbacks hasn’t replaced his rotation spot and could still reunite with him on a new deal that might include short-term or opt-out features. While many once believed that the Dbacks have moved on from Gallen, it appears a reunion is on the cards.
Red Sox’s Case For Eugenio Suarez
Eugenio Suarez is coming off a power-packed year with the Diamondbacks and the Seattle Seahawks. While he hit only .228, he managed to send 49 balls out of the field.
Jim Bowden finds the Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners as the best fits for the third baseman. After losing Alex Bregman and failing to land Bo Bichette, Suarez might be the best remaining infield option for the Red Sox to fill. Bowden noted the successful appearances the third baseman has had when he has hit in Fenway Park.
“He’s hit .425 with four home runs and 14 RBIs in 44 plate appearances at Fenway Park — small sample size but huge results,” Bowden added.
With Fenway Park’s friendly hitting environment and a strong supporting cast (Roman Anthony, Trevor Story, Jarren Duran), Suárez’s bat could take the lineup from middle-of-the-pack homers to a top-10 offensive unit in MLB.
