“Never take moments like this for granted” – Tarik Skubal Celebrates Back-to-Back AL Cy Young Awards as Tigers Future Looms

Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal was honored with his second straight AL Cy Young award following his stellar pitching in 2025. He led the AL with an outstanding 2.21 ERA and 241 strikeouts over the 2025 regular season.

Over the weekend, Skubal attended the 101st annual New York Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) Awards Gala, where he was joined by other award winners like NL MVP Shohei Ohtani, AL MVP Aaron Judge and NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes.

Skubal said he felt humbled to receive the honor.

“I’m humbled to be part of this group, and the greatness from everyone up here is part of what pushes me to be the best version of myself every time I take the mound,” he said. “It’s an honor to be back here, and it’s something I’ll never take for granted.”

Tarik Skubal Ponders About Tigers Future

Tarik Skubal will become a free agent after the 2026 season. There doesn’t appear to be any evidence to believe that he would sign a contract extension with the Tigers for now. As such, there are rumors that he might get traded before the deadline in 2026. However, Skubal is aiming to be with the Tigers till the end of the 2026 season, as he hinted at the same during his acceptance speech.

Skubal mentioned that he discussed the potential of winning three straight Cy Youngs with his Tigers manager, AJ Hinch. Skubal said:

“After last year’s dinner, I told A.J., ‘Same time next year,’ but I didn’t really know it would become a reality. Skip, for the sake of superstition and a three-peat, let’s go ahead and keep the same plan for a year from now. In all seriousness, I never take moments like these for granted, because who knows how many times I’ll be able to share the space with these people.”

By saying this, Skubal said that he intends to pitch for the Tigers in 2026. The Tigers would also like to have him but it would also not be in their best interest to walk him for free when they could acquire a good return for Skubal’s one-year or half-season rental.
