An MLB insider slammed Jose Caballero’s tactics during the New York Yankees’ game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Yankee Stadium on Monday following the benches-clearing incident involving the Pirates’ pitcher, Dennis Santana.
The incident occurred in the eighth inning of the series opener, when Caballero repeatedly waited until the final moments of the pitch clock before stepping into the batter’s box, disrupting Santana’s rhythm. He then grounded a 1-6-3 double play against the pitcher.
Despite securing the out, Santana expressed his frustration by yelling at Caballero and blowing him a kiss. This led to both players shouting and aggressively walking toward each other, prompting both teams’ benches and bullpens to clear. This brawl quickly drew attention across MLB, with insider Jon Heyman criticizing Caballero’s “stall tactics” on X:
“Enough with José Caballero’s stall tactics. He found a tiny loophole in rule, so good for him. But for what? To annoy opposing pitchers and get a pitch clock violation once a month? Guess what, it’s annoying many more than the pitcher now.”
What did Jose Caballero say about his brawl with Dennis Santana?
Shortly after the benches-clearing incident on Monday, Jose Caballero spoke to SNY Yankees about his altercation with the Pirates’ pitcher, Dennis Santana. When asked if he was surprised by Santana’s frustration despite playing within the rules, Caballero replied:
“At this point he’s lucky he doesn’t get a ball right away because at this point it’s been 4 years with the same rules we all should known about the rules. The whole league should know who I am, what I do in the box, and they should be aware of it. For you to get mad about something the league’s implementing in this league, you should be mad at someone else,” Jose Caballero said.
The New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates are currently tied 1-1 in their three-game series, with the final game scheduled for Wednesday.
