MLB Injury Update: Anthony Volpe Reveals Final Rehab Checkpoints; Craig Counsell Addresses Seiya Suzuki’s Knee Injury

The New York Yankees’ Anthony Volpe remains optimistic about returning from rehab by April. On the other hand, the Chicago Cubs’ Seiya Suzuki awaits further testing to assess the severity of his knee injury during the World Baseball Classic.

With the MLB season opener just days away, teams will want their top players in the lineup from the get-go. While there’s no official fixed day for both players’ return, the teams are hoping for a positive update.

Anthony Volpe Shares Feelings Going Through Lengthy Rehab Process

Anthony Volpe is currently in rehabilitation from offseason surgery on the partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. Speaking to MLB insider Meredith Marakovits, the Yankees shortstop said that he is optimistic about his progression and hopes to get back in the rotation by end of April:

“I feel pretty good about where I’m at…I’m not doing everything yet, so I’m really optimistic and excited, and I feel like it’s gonna be sooner rather than later.

“I’m just excited to put it behind me, put the finishing touches on this rehab, and then just get back out there. I mean, I’ve never been hurt in my life, so to go through this process, to go from rock bottom and build it all the way back up, you learn so much, obviously about your shoulder, but I think about yourself…”

In case Volpe isn’t be available, the Yankees have Jose Caballero as an option to fill in. New York will begin its 2026 season on the road against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park on March 25.

Craig Counsell Awaiting Update on Seiya Suzuki’s Knee Injury

Speaking on Sunday to the media, Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell noted that Seiya Suzuki did not undergo any tests before his flight back to Arizona. They’re waiting for the doctors to run the tests and see what they’re actually dealing with. He said:

“We need to see him. He’s on a flight back here, lands sometime later today-late this afternoon. I think it’s going to take us through tomorrow probably to figure out, to get our hands on Seiya and see what’s going on. I think it’s just best we wait and see and let our doctors and trainers take a look at him and see what’s going on.”

Suzuki exited Team Japan’s World Baseball Classic quarterfinals against Venezuela with right knee discomfort. He awkwardly slid headfirst into second base in the first inning during a steal attempt. He was seen limping off the field and was immediately replaced.

While Suzuki was thrilled to represent Japan, this might push back his regular-season debut a little. He missed the 2023 World Baseball Classic games due to an oblique injury.
