MLB Injury Report: RJ Petit Hit With Worrying UCL Setback As Hyeseong Kim Suffers Hand Injury at World Baseball Classic

Colorado Rockies pitching prospect RJ Petit has been sidelined indefinitely after the latest ligament setback. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Hyeseong Kim has suffered a hand injury while representing South Korea in the ongoing 2026 World Baseball Classic.

    Let’s check out these updates.

RJ Petit Hit With Worrying UCL Setback

RJ Petit has reportedly sprained his UCL ligament in his right elbow, as informed by the Rockies on Monday. Petit will be tested further to determine the extent of the injury. This will help the Rockies to decide the best course of action for him. Right now, it’s unknown if Petit will need surgery.

The Rockies picked him first in last year’s Rule 5 draft after the Detroit Tigers drafted him in the 14th round in 2021. Last season, he went 10-2 while posting a 2.44 ERA in two starts and 45 relief appearances for Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. He registered 79 strikeouts and walked 22 in 66.1 innings.

He has already played five minor league seasons, going 21-15 with a 3.40 ERA and 14 saves in five starts and 182 relief appearances.

Petit was expected to claim a spot in the Rockies’ bullpen after the offseason trade of Angel Chivilli and the elbow injury to DFA pickup Pierson Ohl.

Hyeseong Kim Suffers Hand Injury at World Baseball Classic

After starting three straight games at second base for South Korea, Hyeseong Kim was not named in the starting lineup when the team faced Australia on Monday. Kim suffered a left-hand injury while stealing a base against Taiwan on Sunday. It’s unknown how severe Kim’s injury is.

Kim had a blast earlier this Spring Training, putting him in contention for a starting spot on second base. He batted .462 with a 1.154 on-base plus slugging, including one home run, five RBI and two stolen bases in 13 at-bats before leaving for WBC, where is only hitting .100 though.

Since South Korea went on to defeat Australia, they have already advanced in the tournament, with their next game scheduled on Friday. Whether Kim plays will decide how severe the injury to the infielder is.

In case, the injury is severe, the Dodgers would likely replace the Korean with Alex Freeland. With Tommy Edman also out, Miguel Rojas and Santiago Espinala are expected to see extended time at the position.
