Making his professional baseball debut for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of the NPB in 2005, Yu Darvish went on to enjoy tremendous success, earning himself five NPB All-Star selections, two Pacific League MVP awards and two Mitsui Gold Glove awards, while also winning the Japan Series in 2006.
It didn’t take long for MLB teams to take notice of Darvish’s talent, and the ace made his way stateside in 2012, signing with the Texas Rangers.
Since then, Darvish has represented some of the biggest franchises in baseball, such as the LA Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres, earning five All-Star selections and an All-MLB First Team selection.
Recent seasons, however, have not gone to plan for the 39-year-old. In 2025, Yu Darvish endured a disappointing campaign. After missing the first half due to elbow inflammation, Darvish finished with a 5-5 record, a 5.38 ERA and 68 strikeouts. Having undergone internal brace surgery on his right elbow on November 4, the ace is also sidelined for the entirety of 2026.
As a result of his recent injury struggles, reports have claimed Yu Darvish is seriously considering the possibility of retiring from baseball.
Making a brief appearance on Monday’s episode of “Friar Territory,” fellow Padres starting pitcher Joe Musgrove offered his honest opinion on the rumors surrounding his teammate.
“I know Darvish, I know his passion for the game, and his desire to help people around him get better. But I have no expectation as far as what we’re going to get out of him this year,” Musgrove said (Timestamp: 10:51).
“And I don’t say that in a negative term. I just say that as, ‘This is a decision for you.’ He’s got his reasons why he’s doing it. I think it’s extremely admirable what he’s doing. But I don’t want to put any of my opinions out there on it. This is his decision to make 100%, and I don’t feel a certain way about it.”
“I Am Fully Focused On My Rehab For My Elbow” – Yu Darvish Posts to Social Media, Offers Clarity On Retirement Rumors
Rumors of Yu Darvish potentially hanging up his cleats sent fans into overdrive on social media. To offer clarity on the situation, Darvish posted to X on Sunday.
“You may have seen an article, and although I am leaning towards voiding the contract, there’s still a lot that has to be talked over with the Padres so the finer details are yet to be decided,” Darvish posted.
“Also I will not be announcing my retirement yet. Right now I am fully focused on my rehab for my elbow, and if I get to a point where I can throw again, I will start from scratch again to compete. If once I get to that point I feel I can’t do that, I will announce my retirement.”
Yu Darvish still has three years and $46 million remaining on the six-year contract extension he signed with San Diego before the 2023 season.
