The Boston Red Sox enjoyed a strong 2025 season, finishing with an 89-73 record and managing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2021. Looking to build on that success, the Red Sox have plenty of work to do in what remains of the offseason. One of the areas of the roster requiring significant improvement is the infield.
For most of the offseason, re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman was considered to be the team’s priority after he established himself as a fan favorite at Fenway Park with his fine performances in 2025.
Much to the frustration of fans, however, the organization came up short in the pursuit of the three-time All-Star. While Boston took their sweet time in getting a deal over the line for Bregman, the Chicago Cubs swooped in, signing the infielder to a five-year, $175 million contract.
The Red Sox are now scrambling for a replacement, and Houston Astros star Isaac Paredes is reportedly one of the players the organization is targeting.
Although the Astros are in no rush to trade Paredes, The Athletic’s Chandler Rome believes that getting one of the Red Sox’s outfielders in return could potentially convince the two-time World Series winners to part ways with Paredes.
During Monday’s episode of “Crush City Territory,” Rome explained why he thinks the Astros will prefer to acquire Wilyer Abreu instead of Jarren Duran, if such an opportunity arises.
“The Astros prefer Wilyer Abreu over Jarren Duran, if they are going to do a deal with the Red Sox… They are more intrigued by Wilyer Abreu for a number of reasons,” Rome said (Timestamp: 11:50).
“He’s making the league minimum, he’s got more team control, and he’s a two-time Gold Glover in right field. Won it last year too. The defense is better than Duran’s, the offense is still very very good, don’t get me wrong. He’s cheaper, has more years of control, and is a better defender.”
Insider Explains Why Isaac Paredes Would Be A Great Fit For the Red Sox
On January 13’s episode of “Hot Stove,” MLB Network’s Matt Vasgersian explained why he thinks Isaac Paredes would be the perfect player for the Red Sox to go after, after Alex Bregman parted ways with the team in free agency.
“I think they’re going to be just fine (without Bregman). There are multiple paths for them to be better without him next year… This is the option I like best – make a deal for Isaac Paredes,” Vasgersian said on Tuesday’s episode of “Hot Stove.”
“Could there be a better ballpark in the universe for Isaac Paredes than Fenway? I would love to see that happen. The Red Sox fans, they would forget all about Alex Bregman if Isaac Paredes was hitting tanks at Fenway,” he added.
Although the 2025 season was one to forget for the Houston Astros, as they failed to make it to the postseason for the first time since 2016, Isaac Paredes impressed on an individual level. The Mexican infielder batted .254 with 20 home runs and 53 RBIs, earning himself his second All-Star selection.
