The USC Trojans suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the North Carolina Tar Heels in Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional on Sunday, ending their hopes for the MCWS in Omaha. The Trojans had made a winning start to the series against the Tar Heels, winning Game 1, 9-5, but failed to carry that momentum into the final two decisive games.
The Trojans led 3-1 heading into the final two innings of the decisive game, but their bullpen couldn’t hold the lead after a strong start by pitcher Andrew Johnson. They allowed a run in the eighth, and a misjudged catch by CF Kevin Takeuchi in the ninth led to a walk-off hit. The Tar Heels scored the winning run and advanced to the final eight in Omaha.
Evidently, it was a disappointing loss for the Trojans, who, for the first time in 25 years, were so close to entering the final stretch of the MCWS and to playing at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, NE.
Some players were reduced to tears as the coaching staff consoled them, and a distraught Taekuchi was visibly shaken, believing his failure to make a play in the ninth had ended the game for the visitors.
Fans were quick to share their reactions to the Tar Heels’ walk-off hit and to the Trojans’ CF’s failure to make the crucial play in the ninth, which could have sent the game into extra innings and kept USC’s season alive.
“This CF just pulled up on an inning-ending fly ball that would have kept your season alive!” one fan commented.
“Outfielder shorted that. Should have ran into the wall and sold out. Soft,” another fan commented.
“Dude was scared of a wall hope he thinks about it for the next 80 years,” yet another fan commented.
While some fans were critical of Takeuchi’s play at the death, others voiced a more positive tone for the Trojans, rejoicing over a credible season and vowing that the program will come back stronger next year.
“USC will be back with a vengeance next year. They’re young. They’ll hit the portal hard and get a couple impact players. Friday and Saturday starters already locked up next year and multiple impact players returning,” one fan commented.
“I don’t even know what u say to the team after that. Unreal season, we just couldn’t close games,” another fan commented.
“They’ll be back, team that was displaced to Irvine for 2 years and didn’t even play home games and almost back to Omaha first year back on campus,” yet another fan commented.
USC Can Draw a Lot of Positives From a Remarkable Season
Though it was a heartbreaking ending for the Trojans, the 2026 season marked progress for the newly revamped baseball program, surpassing all initial expectations. The team was among the top contenders early on, maintaining momentum through to the Super Regional against North Carolina.
A key highlight was their upset victory over the Texas A&M Aggies in the College Station Regional, winning twice convincingly and defeating the No. 12 national seed. USC finished the 2026 season with a 48-18 overall record and a 20-10 record in the Big Ten.
After falling just one win short of reaching the College World Series twice in the Super Regional, the team’s goal for 2027 will be to advance to that stage and give back to the fans of the program by honoring the trust and expectations they have placed in the team.
