New York Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins due to left-calf tightness. Lindor’s injury came on the same day the slumping Mets reinstated Juan Soto to the starting lineup after he suffered a similar injury in San Francisco on April 3.
The incident occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning when Francisco Alvarez hit a double to right-center, and Lindor rounded the bases from first to score the go-ahead run. As he rounded third, a pained expression appeared on Lindor’s face as he beat the relay throw with a feet-first slide to score the run.
Lindor got up clutching his left leg and immediately went down the dugout tunnel with an athletic trainer. The Puerto Rican was replaced in the infield by Brett Baty, who took lined up at third base, and Bo Bichette shifted to shortstop in the top of the fifth inning.
Earlier in the first inning, Lindor had made an outstanding grab for the second out of the game and had even scored the opening run with an infield single while the Mets were two outs in the first. Although the Mets won the contest 3-2, thereby ending their 12-game skid, the victory came at a heavy price of yet another injury to one of their seasoned stars.
Francisco Lindor has yet to Get His Offense Going This Season
So far this campaign, Lindor has played in 24 matches, registering five RBIs off 21 hits, including two doubles, two triples, and two home runs. Lindor has been struck out 19 times in 93 at-bats, which are slightly underperforming stats for a player of his quality.
Lindor has a .204 batting average and a .642 OPS as the Mets have struggled to an 8-16 record this season, placing them fourth in the NL East. The Mets have yet to announce the exact severity of the injury Lindor has sustained.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how soon Lindor can rejoin the struggling Mets and what his return and rehab timeline would look like.
