Brendan Sorsby was dealt unfortunate news on Tuesday as the NFL announced its decision not to hold a supplemental draft this season. This decision came as a surprise, as his situation had brought a lot of eyeballs to the often-overlooked NFL event.
Sorsby spent two seasons with the Cincinnati Bearcats before making a highly touted move to Texas Tech to replace NFL-bound quarterback Behren Morten. While the Red Raiders have not held back when it comes to NIL spending, especially under super booster Cody Campbell, the team reportedly paid $1,000,000 to the Bearcats for Sorsby.
In an interview on the Wednesday edition of Ross Tucker’s podcast, Louisville’s NIL consultant, Andrew Brandt, spoke on the Cardinals’ pursuit of Sorsby before his move to Texas Tech, saying:
“I reached out to Brendan Sorsby’s agent, like, “What’s going on here? Can we get in this?” And the price was too steep. We didn’t get in it at Louisville. But I heard about Texas Tech. By the way, a million-dollar buyout to Cincinnati, which is now in litigation as well. And then over the past six weeks, we’ve had the proliferation of the two areas of sports that have changed the most in the past 10 years by far, which are sports betting and NIL.”
While Sorsby was reportedly chased by Indiana as well as Louisville, the Cardinals backed off him after Cincinnati revealed its “steep” asking price.

Insider Reveals NFL’s Thought Process Behind Supplemental Draft Shutdown
While the NFL announced its decision not to hold the supplemental draft after the deadline for applications passed on Monday, insider Dan Graziano cleared the air on why the decision was made.
On “SportsCenter” on Tuesday, Graziano said:
“They wanted more information. They didn’t feel they had the time to get it, and so decided to not have a supplemental draft.”
Graziano explained that in the letter that was sent to Brendan Sorsby as well as all 32 NFL teams, the league mentioned that the Texas Tech quarterback was the only applicant to this year’s draft, and Sorsby’s application coming in at the 11th hour gave the league no time to properly vet the entire situation.
Despite the NFL closing its door, Sorsby is expected to challenge the decision, according to Jeffrey Kessler.
