Ty Simpson and Fernando Mendoza were two of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 college football season; however, while one finished the season with a Heisman Trophy and a national championship, the other one had a rough end to the season with a 38-3 loss against the Hoosiers.
While Mendoza is projected to be the first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Simpson has been making waves in terms of projections on whether he’d go in the first round or end up sliding out of it.
Simpson, though, is considered a talented quarterback; many analysts doubt his future as an NFL player. However, according to Todd McShay, there isn’t a big difference between Mendoza and the ex-Alabama star.
“I’m in the camp that the gap between he (Simpson) and Mendoza is not nearly as big as the public seems to think. Although there is I understand it and it’s much greater between Simpson and QB3. If you were kind of dropped into this as an NFL coach, right, and you were handed the first eight or even nine tapes for both Mendoza and Simpson, I promise you Simpsons tape’s better. It just is. Now, Simpson’s 6’1, he’s 211 lbs. He’s got 15 starts. In his one year as a starter, he wasn’t able to stay healthy throughout the year.”
“But if you’re looking for the best of Ty Simpson versus the best of Mendoza, I don’t see it as a huge gap. Now Mendoza’s tape wasn’t great versus Iowa until the end when they needed it.”
Todd McShay Offers Intel on Potential Ty Simpson-Browns Union
The Browns possess the number 6th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, which has the fans wondering whether he could end up joining the chaotic Browns quarterback room.
During an appearance on the “Up and Adams” episode, McShay revealed that as Simpson starts to get more hype to his name after the NFL Combine, fans are starting to wonder if he could end up in Cleveland.
“I’m already starting to hear people (say), ‘Can he go as high as Cleveland?’” McShay said. “I hope for Ty Simpson’s sake he does not become a Cleveland Brown. They don’t have the protection, they don’t have the weapons.” McShay said.
The Browns currently have three quarterbacks fighting for the QB1 position in Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and DeShaun Watson.
