“He Was Way Too Loose”: Analyst Weighs In on Kalen DeBoer’s Weaknesses in 2025 Amid Massive $87.5M Contract Extension

After spending two whole years as the head coach of among the greatest college football programs after 7x national champ, Nick Saban announced his retirement in January 2024.

Kalen DeBoer has had few ups and downs in his time at Alabama so far as in the first year he finished the season with an overall record of 9-4 and in the 2025 college football season, the offensive line was seen struggling a lot.

Despite the rocky two years, Alabama has affirmed their faith in DeBoer with a 7-year, $87.5 million contract extension, which means he would be taking home $12.5M per year.

Talking about his thoughts on DeBoer’s journey at Alabama so far and what’s to come for the Crimson Tide head coach, analyst Jordan Rodgers said:

“Yeah, I have concerns, but you got to remember there was also an opposite coordinator change. You went from Nick Sheridan to Ryan Grubb as he came from the NFL back to Alabama. So there’s a little bit of system change as well going from Jalen Milroe to Ty Simpson. So there’s a lot more scheme that changed behind the scenes. I think people realize that led to some of the inconsistency especially in the run game. But you’re right. I think that’s a product of Alabama’s roster got poached in NIL.”

“He lost a little bit of the grace year one. Yeah. Because he tried to be someone he really wasn’t. He tried to be opposite of Nick. Because you don’t want to come in and try to be Nick Saban. So he was way too loose, gave way too much leash to a lot of the guys from a very strict program to one that was more player-led. He got way too far on that side. He’s found his happy medium. He’s found his identity after Nick Saban, and I think it’s only going to get better,” Rodgers added.

Kalen DeBoer Reacts to $87.5M, 7-Year Contract Extension With Alabama

Kalen DeBoer has had the honor of signing one of the most lucrative deals in the college football world, making him reach Kirby Smart levels of pay within just two years with the program.

After DeBoer was announced to sign the massive contract extension, he extended his gratitude towards Chancellor Trant, the Board of Trustees, Director of Athletics Greg Byrne, President (Peter)Mohler,  and more.

DeBoer added that the University has become a special place for him and family and that they are very excited to continue their time in Tuscaloosa with the contract extension.

“This program has a long history of success and an unmatched tradition that I was eager to be a part of two years ago, and I cannot wait to keep coaching our guys and bring more championships to Alabama,” DeBoer said.

The Alabama head coach further said that he aims to keep the Crimson Tide football at the forefront of college football.
