Steve Sarkisian has pointed to some crucial advice he received from none other than Nick Saban as coaches in college football try to deal with the many challenges the game seems to throw up every few years.
At the Texas High School Coaches Association convention, Sarkisian spoke about one lesson he learned from Saban, under whom he worked briefly at Alabama.
“Remaining adaptable as a coach is really important to the different schemes, the recruiting process, the players, all the things that are happening in our time and he (Nick Saban) finished that comment (about) why it’s important to be adaptable because he said ‘adapt or die.’ There’s a reason dinosaurs aren’t on the earth anymore so to quote Nick Saban, be adaptable,” Sarkisian said.
Steve Sarkisian Says He and Joey McGuire Are Good Now
The Texas High School Coaches Association convention has especially come into the limelight because it featured Texas coach Steve Sarkisian sitting next to Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire, who exchanged barbs with Sark not too long ago.
“We are sitting next to each other, y’all,” Sarkisian joked to the crowd, putting his arm around McGuire. “We’re all good up here.”
Sarkisian had earlier referred to Tech at a luncheon sponsored by the Touchdown Club of Houston.
“There’s a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they’ll probably make the CFP this year,” the Longhorns coach said.
McGuire had responded to the comment at the Big 12 spring meetings by saying, “Sark’s a pretty tough guy, his teams are really tough, and I would think if he was talking about us he would call us out. Like he wouldn’t just say this comment of ‘well there’s another team in our state.’ So, I guess he was talking about us.”
Sarkisian and McGuire certainly do seem like they’ve buried the hatchet after some tense previous words.
