For South Carolina Gamecocks shooting guard Tessa Johnson, this is it, as this final against UCLA could be another milestone as she seeks another national title on Sunday. Like many of the team’s big stars, she spoke with members of the media ahead of the National Championship game and was asked about her career and what has changed in her perspective since playing for South Carolina.
“I kind of knew this my freshman year, but I feel like it feels a little different on my junior year, just that every possession matters like you don’t know how the game is gonna end… anything can happen… and being able to flip on to the next page,” she told reporters.
Johnson is still a junior so she still has a year of eligibility remaining. However, she has already learned much, including being able to manage the clock, as she pointed out, anything can happen during the closing second of a game.
She added that during her three years with the Gamecocks, she had also learned to focus on what matters and play their hardest to win. With her making it to the championship game, she has now played in the national final for three years in a row, winning it in her freshman year before losing to UConn last year as a sophomore and then returning again this year, this time against UCLA.
Tessa Johnson Reached Career Milestone in Elite Eight Win Over TCU
Meanwhile, Johnson herself has garnered a career milestone during her junior year. The shooting guard reached 1000 points scored during the Elite Eight against TCU with a three-pointer. This happened during the fourth quarter and she already had 998, 999 career points before that shot. However, she was not that impressed by it.
“I did not know that … I’m not going to lie, I didn’t even know about it,” she said. “But I don’t really care, as long as we won the game.”
She was happier for freshman Agot Makeer, however, as she was one of the reasons South Carolina won that game. The Canadian had 18 points, added four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
