Minnesota Golden Gophers guard Amaya Battle admitted that she struggled against Ole Miss Rebels star Cotie McMahon.
On Sunday, March 22, Battle and the rest of Coach Dawn Plitzuweit’s Golden Gophers beat Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s Ole Miss Rebels 65-63 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
With the game going down the wire in front of the Golden Gophers faithful at the Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Battle had a clutch play against Ole Miss scorer McMahon, which was questionably called as an offensive foul.
During the post-game press conference, in a video uploaded by @brwsports on Instagram, Battle said that she added a bit of motion to it.
“Yeah, I mean, she got a ton of buckets on me, on us, and it was because she was like powering through. And I was like, ‘Alright, I’m just gonna try and fall and see what happens.’ And it worked out,” Battle shared.
“Amaya Battle had to get creative to stop Ole Miss’s leading scorer, Cotie McMahon 🫣 Cotie fouled out just over midway through the 4th after only playing 21 minutes. Ole Miss lost in the second round of the tournament by 2 to Minnesota,” @brwsports on Instagram captioned with an emoji.
McMahon, the Rebels’ standout, fouled out of the game. Battle and company took advantage of the momentum shifting in their favor to eventually come back against Ole Miss and win by merely two points, 67-65. With the win, the Minnesota-based program moved into the Sweet 16 of the Big Dance and will face Coach Cori Close’s UCLA Bruins.
Yolett McPhee-McCuin Says The Last Call On Cotie McMahon Was Incorrect
In the other video uploaded by @brwsports on Instagram’s carousel post, Ole Miss Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin was asked about her thoughts on the call made against Cotie McMahon.
Coach Yo and her team believe that the offensive foul call was incorrect. But, she understood that moments like these can be due to plain human error.
“And from my point of view, that last call was incorrect. We watched it 1500 times. One of the things that I do understand is that officials are human and environments…They’re human, so environments create them to officiate in a particular type of way. I don’t think that’s why we lost the game. I just know that Cotie is the leading scorer, newcomer of the year, all of the things, and she plays 20 minutes,” McPhee-McCuin shared.
“It’s disappointing because these fans deserved more than that. The game deserves more than that, and I just think officiating as a whole really needs to be looked at,” she continued.
